It’s that time of year again: 4/20’s about to roll around, and every good stoner is getting ready.
There’s a lot you can do to celebrate. Roll one up, blaze one up, chant for peace and love, and eat a whole entire pizza cake… or maybe, just maybe, watch a few stoner flicks.
For those of us who are just getting into the cannabis game, or anybody who didn’t smoke in the early days of college, when Harold & Kumar was constantly streaming on at least one TV per dorm, here’s a handy list of the best stoner movies you can find, well, anywhere.
Even though Grandma’s Boy, an Adam Sandler movie about a video game tester who gets evicted and has to move in with his grandmother, flopped at box offices, it’s a tried and true stoner classic today.
I won’t spoil it for you, but there’s an amazing success story woven into this stoner comedy. Also, a scene where three elderly ladies admit to getting high. Watch the trailer below:
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
Two stoners come down with a bad case of the munchies and take a misadventure-filled trip through the state of New Jersey on their quest to reach a White Castle.
Here’s the trailer:
And here’s a bonus trailer for “Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay”:
The Pineapple Express
After a stoner (Seth Rogen) witnesses a murder (and the involvement of a dirty cop), he embarks on a mission for justice with his drug dealer/partner in crime (James Franco).
Drama ensues. Check out the trailer:
In this 1998 film, which stars Dave Chappelle, Jon Stewart, and Snoop Dogg, three friends steal marijuana from a lab where one of them works and sell it in order to bail their good-natured friend out of jail.
But once our hero’s straight-edge girlfriend and the local competition find out who’s behind their booming business, there’s hell to pay. After a whole lot of craziness, including an appearance by the ghost of Jerry Garcia, our stoner heroes reign supreme.

The Big Lebowski
1998 was a great year for stoner comedies, and The Big Lebowski is just more evidence. Jeff Bridges stars as “The Dude,” a Los Angeles deadbeat who doesn’t do much but smoke weed, make White Russians, and bowl.
When he’s the victim of a case of mistaken identity, it leads to madness. There’s a kidnapping, a ransom, and a rich guy. Check out the trailer below:
Cheech & Chong’s Up In Smoke
Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong star in this 1978 comedy about a kid (Tommy Chong) who’s kicked out of his house by his parents for being a slacker. He hitchhikes his way into Pedro de Pacas (Cheech Marin)’s life, and together they wind up deported to Tijuana.
Find out what else happens in the trailer below:
This one’s an anti-marijuana piece of government propaganda from the ’30s, which makes it a perfect choice to watch this 4/20. A group of perfectly nice kids slides into absurd adventures and crime after they smoke the “reefer” and descend into total madness.
Make sure you’ve got a great bong bowl ready for this one, ’cause you’ll need it. Watch the trailer:
Super High Me
In a creative play on the “Super Size Me” franchise, comedian Doug Benson smokes weed every day for a month in order to gauge the effects, both good and bad.
While he gains eight pounds and gets worse at mental math, his sperm count actually increases, and his physician points out that cannabis didn’t really change Benson for better or for worse.
Hilariously, Benson actually does better on the SAT during his “stoned” month, as well as an ESP (extra sensory perception, aka mind-reading) test. Here’s the trailer:
