Mention “dabs” to a cannabis consumer a mere five years ago, and you’d probably be met with looks of confusion.

Back in the day, flowers were the first and foremost marijuana treat for stoners, from dispensaries and dealers alike. Vendors would talk up the kiefy leaves of their Grape Ape, or coax buyers to try the “fire” Blue Dream. It was a simple time, but life is all about change — and we embrace that.

Today, dabs are dominating the canna-sphere, and the market is welcoming them with open arms. (I mean, open oil rigs.)

Once, headshops were full to the brim of bongs — ROOR and Delta and knockoffs of each. Now, they’re experiencing a renaissance with the advent of glass tools for the explicit purpose of blazin’ different kinds of oils.

As we broke it down in our last article about dabs, wax, shatter, BHO and dabs are all just different forms of cannabis extract. Think of it as cannabis oil in different forms, and know that each will get you equally lifted.

And you have a whole lot of choice when it comes to smoking up. Sure, you can just drop extracts on top of a bowl or a joint, but what if you want to go straight for the concentrated high?

You’ve got lots of options when it comes to rigging, so take your time and do your research. Like a bong but just for extracts, this is a piece of glass that has form, style, and function. You’ll light up the oil and let it smoke off before ever taking your hit; to clarify, with an oil rig, you’ll never be inhaling with an open flame, which is pretty cool.

For an idea of the variety out there, check out the options at GrassCity. There are plenty of local vendors who show off their wares on Instagram, too; you can find them through a simple search.

Some see these as the safest option for smoking, but we’re not so sure. Studies have found carcinogens in many inexpensive vape pens, and it’s unclear just what effects the high heat of these utensils could have on our lungs in the future.

So if you want to try out vaping oil, start with a higher-end piece like this Magic Flight Launch Box. It’s been tried and tested, which is more than we can say for the tools that are made en masse in China, then sold in vape shops for $30 a pop. Think of it as an investment in your health.

Which ever way you end up going your experieince will be more dependent on the type of strain you are consuming. Some sativa strains have a higher thc balance than indica but that does not necessarily mean you will get higher.

With oil rigs you will definitely be getting higher then using a vaporizer. This occurs because of the thc levels in cannabis extracts are much higher in concentrate form then flower. Check out some of the funny videos on youtube of people using oil rigs for dabbing. When it comes to choosing the right oil rig it comes down to the quality of the glass and the design. They are similar to glass bongs but instead of having a flower attachment they come with the oil rig attachments.
